Most folks out there feel that turkey bacon is a healthy alternative to your standard pork bacon, and I do agree. One of the things that appeals to me, and i know a lot of you out there, there is really no fat content in turkey bacon, so it’s definitely the healthy alternative. It’s cured, it’s different in that it’s usually breast meat, thigh meat, and it’s processed into a slice. And it’s different from pork bacon where it’s from the pork belly and there’s a fat content and a meatier content to it. So, those are some of the differences in turkey bacon.
One of the things that you do differently with turkey bacon is you definitely want to go low and slow in your skillet. It’s not gonna generate as much grease or any at all, as with your pork bacon, and you definitely want to move it around because it does tend to stick to your skillet. So, I’d definitely would rather use a nonstick variety when you’re cooking with turkey bacon.
As far as turkey bacon goes, you’re a little limited as far as what you can do. I believe with the flavor palette and the texture and how it’s composed, it’s really for breakfast. And I would definitely say breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I don’t think I would recommend it for dessert. Some of the things that I’ve done, basically I’ve done frittatas, I’ve put it on pizzas, wraps, salads, and things of that nature. And sandwiches, as well. And those are some of the things that you can do with turkey bacon. There are a lot of great things out there, so do what you like, and let’s see what you come up with.
